HOLiDAY Futures Festival of Neighborhood Sustainability

Holiday Park (15th and Yaupon), Boulder, Colorado

This is an interactive all-ages event for those who live, work, play and learn in Holiday and surrounding neighborhoods to create and express visions for the sustainability of the Holiday neighborhood and beyond. Events include a park clean-up, a walking-bus musical parade, interactive exhibits about social and environmental sustainability, music, potluck picnic and lots of fun.


IISN, in partnership with the Holiday neighborhood, invites you to participate in the “HOLiDAY Futures Festival of Neighborhood Sustainability” The purpose of the Festival is to create a safe space where people of all ages who live, work, play, and learn in Holiday can connect with each other and explore together a sustainable future. The Futures Festival is also intended to serve as a first step in creating and implementing a long-term vision for neighborhood sustainability in the Holiday neighborhood.  View pdfs of schedule brochure, and Futures Festival Sponsors at bottom of this page

Schedule of activities

10:00am Community Cleanup: Gather at Holiday Park.

10:45am Kids of all ages Parade -
Meander thru neighborhood lead by Piped Piper--Andrew Forbes.

11:00am - 2:30pm Futures Festival Exhibits,
Zero-Waste Potluck Picnic, Music, Kid activities .

Zero-Waste Potluck Picnic

Bring your lunch, cups, and utensils. Proto’s Pizza and Indian Peaks Spring Water are providing ice tea, lemonade and water.  Let Boulder know that Holiday understands what Zero-waste is.

Music

10:45am Andrew Forbes will be leading the Piped Piper Kid(s of all ages) Parade from Garden Crossing to Holiday Park where he will continue to woe the audience. 
11:30am Michael Stanwood The audience is invited to join Michael as he entertains and engages us to sing about sustainability and living on the planet.
12:30pm The Bonnie Lowdermilk Trio Enjoy an afternoon of Jazz with Holiday’s own Bonnie Lowdermilk with vocals and piano.  Bonnie is joined by Mark Diamond on bass, Jeremy Salken on drums.

  • Independent Power Systems See their Solar displays, join the Solar tours of the neighborhood, find information on the new Smart Grid.  Also they will be leading some games for the kids.
  • The City of Boulder’s ClimateSmart team will present ideas for mobilizing neighborhood action on climate change.  ClimateSmart would like to challenge the Holiday neighborhood to become the third Boulder neighborhood organizing around individual household actions that collectively reduce global warming.  A representative from the team will explain funding support available, offer block leader trainings, and can provide ideas for engaging, community-building, energy-reducing efforts that support Boulder’s vision of working in earnest towards a sustainable future
  • Boulder CarShare hope to bring the car they will be launching in Holiday.  CarSharing is the smart alternative to owning a car. Members have access to a number of cars and pay only for actual use. In so doing, they help the environment and their communities; and they save money. CarSharing is for people who need a car occasionally for short trips.  Check out how you can be part of the solution.  They will also have information from GO Boulder and Eco-Passes. Find out how to get yours!
  • Eco-Cycle provides a wide variety of community education services and activities to encourage recycling, promote waste reduction and advance our community’s progress toward Zero Waste. If you are you committed to individual and community action, visit with Eco-Cycle staff to hear about what Eco-Cycle is doing to further the Zero Waste vision in our community and learn about how you can get involved!
  • Holiday Neighborhood Master Assoc. Check out the recent relaunch of their website, see a vision a community orchard and join their new listserv.
  • Red Pine Studioshas designed the new Holiday Neighborhood website and will be bringing video cams for neighbors to share their visions of the future Holiday neighborhood.
  • Boulder Journey School is bringing activities to the Futures Festival which includes item most of us throw away.  They want to showcase these items and ask the neighbors to bring these items to the Futures Festival or to their school at the intersection of Yarmouth and 19th.  See the Journey School pdf below.
  • tres birds workshop We can only imagine what tres birds will bring as they promise a hands-on found materials exhibit. Look for the timberframe structure and create spaces with tres birds workshop.
  • Community Cycles will be on hand to do bike tune-ups, and collect bicycles for their Earn-A-Bike and other bicycle advocacy and outreach programs.  So BRING YOUR BIKES!!
  • Boulder Housing Partners (BHP) brings a presentation of the history of BHP’s involvement in the creation of the Holiday Neighborhood leading to an outline of their current and upcoming projects. See samples of eco-friendly building materials, and info on other BHP programs and opportunities.  BHP also will be bringing a model of Holiday for the kids to express their thoughts and visions of the neighborhood.
  • Holiday Park Playground – A representative from the City of Boulder’s Parks will be on hand to share the plans for the playground and discuss the collaborative work, which lead to this creation.  Soon we can all play on this awesome playground.
  • Harlequin’s Gardens is working with members of the Holiday Neighborhood Master Assoc and will be doing some planting in the southwest corner of the park.
  • Colorado Permaculture Teachers Guild will introduce us to native plants, answer questions about permaculture and how the permaculture model helps us vision and create a sustainable future.
  • Chickens, worms and bees!  OH MY!! Join Sustainable Boulder Education Center
    for some hands on fun.
  • Pete Rodgers Solar Truck – Pete, a house call veterinarian, drives a solar truck.  Check out this alternative.
  • Green Heart Institute
  • will bring a survey to help you see your hidden carbon footprint and introduce some ways to go green with “heart.”
  • Gardens by the Yard, a pilot project of Growing Gardens (the organization that runs Boulder’s community gardens and Cultiva), aims to bridge the gap between the lack of space for community gardens and an ever-expanding waiting list of people who want to grow food.  See how this yard/work exchange program works.
